The pandemic that is so suddenly upon us has created challenges for every kind of organisation in the world. COVID-19’s impact is felt by many millions – from healthcare providers to office managers, aid workers on the front line, clerical staff, government workers, teachers, students, university professors, shop keepers and the many millions more who have already lost their jobs. For a growing number, friends and relatives have sadly lost their lives.

If ever there was a time to reach out to reassure clients – and to guide them on how to communicate with the people, firms and communities they serve – it is right now.

Maintaining communications during COVID-19 is essential

For most organisations, continuity is an important goal: but achieving that requires careful communications with a workforce that is working from home, with suppliers who need paying and a myriad of other interconnected stakeholders. Our job is to help our clients to provide their stakeholders with reassurance and the information they need to achieve business continuity whilst promoting renewed hope for the future.

We recognise that the level of uncertainty is high. But there are ways to provide hope where there is fear. This is why we are advising our clients to continue engaging with all of their stakeholders across Africa and all other markets they touch upon. This outreach must be comprehensive, completely transparent and authentic.

Putting aside the restrictions on events and social interaction, our experience has already shown that engaging with people during times of crisis – whatever the medium – builds trust.  In the coming days and weeks, we will share best practices and new creative engagement ideas that are sensitive to the situation while working towards reminding all of us that the pain and uncertainty of today will fade and a belief in the future will return.

It is good to see that Djembe clients are following our advice.  Below are some examples of general and COVID-19 initiatives that our clients are activating to ensure they are still part of the narrative on Africa.

We are clear: after causing much pain this global pandemic will pass. Until then, we must keep talking – no matter how far apart we are.
