Targeting African Innovators

For the second consecutive year, Djembe was tasked with developing and implementing a communications program for the Zayed Sustainability Prize (ZSP), which is managed by Masdar, to drive entries from innovative businesses across Africa. As the only Africa outreach partner for the Prize, the brief was to increase submissions from markets such as Ethiopia and Morocco, whilst increasing awareness right across the continent.

As a direct result of Djembe’s strategy, ZSP received a record-breaking total of 2,373 submissions – an increase of 13% in 2019, which followed a 60% increase in 2018. Africa retained its status as a top region, with Nigeria performing in the top 5 of all countries globally. Further to submission numbers, relationships across the continent were strengthened in preparation for future editions of the Prize.

Strategic Execution by Djembe

  • Djembe utilized its network of key local innovation enablers (Hubs, incubators, academia, investors and large corporates) alongside local media to host a series of strategic roadshows and high-level one-on-one meetings in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco and Nigeria
  • Supported roadshows by a concerted media and social media campaign including placing impact stories with past winners in leading African tier 1 media
  • Conducted direct marketing through HTML emailers, mobile and WhatsApp outreach, and one-to-one candidate outreach to assist them in completing high quality submissions in time for the prize deadline
